Hello! On behalf of the entire SELFiD team, welcome to our blog! It is my privilege to kick off our blog posts with what I hope you find to be a warm welcome and deeper dive into who we are. So, without further delay, we’ll jump right in.
First, let’s chat about the basics. SELFiD, or “Self-image Defined,” is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in Lincoln, NE dedicated to helping youth cultivate a positive self-image and individually define health. Our mission is achieved primarily through multi-day events where attendees experience riveting keynote speakers and are guided through SELFiD curriculum by world-class facilitators who are experts in the field of holistic well-being. Find out more about our first No Filter Needed event here. Easy enough, right?
Let’s dig a little deeper. SELFiD operates on a foundation we refer to as the “health trifecta,” a combination of mental, physical and emotional well-being that we believe to be critical in building your best self. Recognizing that the term health cannot be universally defined, our focus stems from a place of preventative health and individualized care. We believe health looks and feels just a little bit different to everyone. However, with the fad diets, celebrity endorsed weight loss products, and way in which the “non-stop, must do it all lifestyle” is idolized, it’s no wonder our youth struggle with differentiating between what is healthy and what is not. About a year ago, it dawned on me that society as a whole is wonderfully reactive about providing resources for individuals who know they need help through outlets such as treatment centers and counseling. But, then I had to ask myself, why isn’t anyone doing something more proactive? Bottom line: eating disorders, poor self-esteem, body dysmorphia, and all other things related shouldn’t even be happening.
And thus, SELFiD was created. Now…allow me to be blunt here for a moment. SELFiD does not exist to tell our youth what they should be eating, how much they should be exercising, or how they should best handle their emotions. Rather, SELFiD exists to facilitate a movement – a movement in which our youth feel empowered, educated, and confident in their ability to make decisions when faced with choices that directly impact their well-being.
Moving forward, we intend for this blog space to be one of thought leadership and conversation. You will find writing from SELFiD’s founders, our Board of Directors, and guest posts from subject matter experts sharing their thoughts and expertise regarding holistic health. As my final thought, I would like to encourage you (parents and youth, alike) to interact with us – ask questions, leave comments, and request writing on particular topics you’re curious about. The conversation has to start somewhere, it might as well be right here. We are so excited to get to know you.
With gratitude,
Ashley
